Dickie's: A LAN Party Memoir (An Unreal Binge)

Since 1999-2000 New Year’s Eve- New Year’s we have played Unreal Coop from start to finish every New Year’s Eve. Some may call us crazy, but if you ask me, any good game you play single player becomes an awesome game when you play it coop at a LAN. We would run around and try to sneak up on the Skarj in flanking maneuvers, only to be attacked by those annoying spiders that seem to come out of nowhere. Getting lost from the group was always our greatest challenge and navigating through tunnels and trap doors and flipping switches. Unreal is truly a beautiful game.

Levels like the Sunspire and Bluff Eversmoking took a long time to successfully navigate. One of the funniest things I remember is when we finally made it to the top of the Sunspire level and waited for the ship to come down we had a contest to see who could fall the fastest all the way down to the lava 1000 ft. below. Another funny time was when one of my friends got locked inside a room with a rock thrower and a ton of other enemies. When playing Bluff Eversmoking (aka ‘the Bell tower level.’ Which took us over 3 hours to beat) I went ahead at the beginning and let the little rabbits out of their cage and then ran like a mad man after being chased by a huge Skarj which nearly gave me a heart-attack. Then the tram at the end which takes you around the island which all three of us who were playing fell off of!!! The level that scared me the most was the one just before the end one where the power is cut to the mothership and this glowing Skarj comes out and you try to run away from him but instead run into a pack of spiders and another whole group of enemies, and you have no idea where you are or where you’re going. I think the first time we went through Unreal we finished off two and a half 24 packs of Coke (In about a 10 hour period). Playing it coop makes it all the more fun.
